Jennie Wade Memorial 39.819700 by -77.230383
Jennie Wade is said to be the only civilian killed in the Battle of Gettysburg. 20 year old Jennie was making bread on the morning of July 3, 1863 when struck by a stray bullet. Her sister, Georgia Wade McClellan moved to Iowa after the War and led an effort to properly recognize Jennie. The memorial and statue was erected by the WRC of Iowa in 1901 at her grave site in Evergreen Cemetery (this was Cemetery Hill in the battle). It is located off Baltimore Pike. Follow the main road through the cemetery - it is by the flagpole. Photos taken May 15, 2010.
Also shown is the stone at the gravesite of Georgia Wade McClellan at Oakland Cemetery in Denison, Iowa. She was a Civil War Nurse and active in the WRC in Iowa after the War. This photo was taken on June 19, 2010. On June 29, 2013, a memorial was dedicated in Denison in honor of Georgia. Go to Denison in Crawford County.
