Carbon - Civil War Monument - GPS Coordinates: 41.033716 by -94.794250

This is a 12 foot granite monument with inscriptions of soldiers around the monument. The inscriptions under "In Southern Graves" include soldiers in the 4th and 29th Iowa Infantry Regiments. There are also inscriptions listed as "Died since the War." The base of the monument had broken up and was wonderfully restored. On June 3, 2017, the monument was re-dedicated by the the Camp Guard of the SUVCW Kinsman Camp and Corning American Legion Post. The final photo includes family members of soldiers listed on the monument. This is located in Oakland Cemetery near Carbon and on the site of Quincy (which no longer exists). About one mile east of Carbon, take Hickory Avenue south for about 1/2 mile and the cemetery is to the right or west of the road. The monument is in the north section of the cemetery. Corning - GAR Monument and Cannon - GPS Coordinates: 40.998600 by -94.741533

This is a 10 foot granite shaft erected by the WRC. The inscription reads "To Adams County Soldiers 1861 - 1865." The cannon is an 8 inch siege howitzer, M1861 cast at the Fort Pitt Foundry in 1862. These are located in the Walnut Grove Cemetery on the NW side of town. Take 17th Street west off Highway 148 to the cemetery. Photos taken 5/2/08 and 10/22/17.


Corning - Veterans Monument - GPS Coordinates: 40.990300 by -94.734566
This is a Veterans monument with small medallions for all wars. It is a semi-circular brick wall about 4 ½ feet high with flags in background. Interestingly, there is a Confederate medallion. The monument is in a park north of the business district. Photo taken 11/24/07.


Mount Etna - Civil War Monument - GPS Coordinates: 41.101200 by -94.715500

This is a 10 foot granite obelisk with inscriptions of 16 soldiers from the region who were killed in action or died of disease. It is located in Forest Hill Cemetery about 2 miles SE of the very small town of Mount Etna. Take Jupiter Road south of town to Mount Etna Trail to the Cemetery. The monument is located toward the center of the Cemetery. Thanks to Mike Carr for notification of the monument. Photos taken 10/10/19.
