Oak Hill Cemetery - Allamakee County - Lansing - 43.358100 by -91.239650
This is a 24-pounder flank howitzer, M1844, cast at Cyrus Alger & Co. in 1863. It is in the Civil War section of Oak Hill Cemetery close to the road by the flagpole. There are 17 CW headstones nearby. Take South Road Drive, a dirt road off Highway 9. The cemetery is south of the highway and SW of town. Photos taken 6/3/21.
Elmwood Cemetery - Black Hawk County - Waterloo - 42.491483 by -92.356433
There are three 24 pounder flank howitzers, M1844 located in Elmwood Cemetery. Two of these were cast at Fort Pitt Foundry in 1858 - the other at Cyrus Alger & Co. in 1847. The cemetery is in the west central part of town. The entrance is at Baltimore and Sullivan. The monument is close to the entrance. The first photo was taken 3/28/08 - the second on a return visit 8/13/19.
Mike Magee provided historical information, "Articles in the Iowa State Reporter and Waterloo Courier indicate that Representative Nathan C. Deering of Osage introduced a bill in Congress in May 1882 that would provide three condemned cannon and four cannon balls for the soldier's lot at Elmwood Cemetery. The cannon and cannon balls arrived in January 1883." Today the cannon balls are gone. Thanks to Mike and Jo Porter for providing this information.

This cannon is in bad shape - it is inverted and has had a crack repaired and is held together with metal straps. It is a 24-pounder flank howitzer, M1844 cast at the Cyrus Alger & Co. foundry. The cemetery is in the NE part of town. Take Fulton Street through the business district to Jensen and then turn east to the cemetery. The monument and cannon are in the center area of the cemetery. The cannon is about 100 feet SE of the monument. Photos taken 5/4/14.

This is a 24-pounder flank howitzer, M1844, cast at Cyrus Alger & Co. in 1863. These are in a wonderful location in Riverfront Park overlooking a lock on the Mississippi River. The park is just north of the business district. Photos taken 3/24/08, 9/11/10 and 6/3/21.
Riverside Cemetery - Floyd County - Charles City - 43.076716 by -92.687883
This cannon was presented to the city in 1900. It was rededicated by the SUVCW in 2001. It is a 24-pounder flank howitzer, M1844 cast at Cyrus Alger & Co. in 1863. Riverside Cemetery is difficult to find. It is in the NW part of town. From downtown - take Lane Street which turns into Shelby - then turn right and take Hart Street to the entrance. The cannon is NW of the entrance - look for the flagpole. Photo taken 9/3/10.
Montrose Cemetery - Lee County - Montrose - 40.533550 by -91.420233
This is a 24-pounder flank howitzer, M1844 cast at Cyrus Alger & Co. in 1847. It was restored in 2008 which is a great improvement. Also in the photo is the tombstone of Cato Mead, the only African-American Revolutionary War Veteran known to be buried in Iowa. As a comparison before restoration, the cannon in the old upright position with a carved wooden owl on top is also shown below. It is in the Montrose Cemetery north of town. Take 1st Street north to the cemetery. The cannon is on the left as you enter the cemetery. The photo after restoration was taken 8/3/10. The photo before restoration was taken 12/29/07.

The cannon is a 24-pounder flank howitzer, M1844, cast at Cyrus Alger & Co. in 1863. According to SUVCW member James Johnston, there used to be a second cannon, but it was melted down for scrap in WWII. The park is located in the central business district off Business Highway 151. Courthouse Square - Muscatine County - Muscatine - 41.424266 by -91.043016
There are two 5.82-inch 24-pounder flank howitzers, M1844 manufactured at Cyrus Alger & Co. - one in 1849 - the other does not have markings to identify the date. The cannons are pointed South and not by accident according to Muscatine County history. A cannonball stack lies between the cannons. There is a veteran’s monument for all veterans on the east side of the Courthouse lawn. The Courthouse monument is located on the corner of Walnut and E 3rd Street. Two 24-pounder flank howitzers, M1844, are on each side of the monument. Both howitzers were manufactured at West Point Foundry in 1858. These are located at a nice new location on the NE corner of the Courthouse Square.

There are two identical 24-pounder flank howitzers, M1844 on the NE and NW corners of the park. The top one has Registry Number #26 from West Point Foundry. The lower one has Registry Number #20 from the same foundry.

This Civil War cannon is a 24-pounder flank howitzer, M1844, cast at Cyrus Alger & Co. in 1863. It weighs 1479 pounds and is the 319th cannon of this make manufactured. It is securely mounted in brick at the cemetery entrance. It is the centerpiece of an attractive Veterans Memorial. The location is in the north part of town off N Broadway Street.
