Anamosa - Civil War Soldier GPS Coordinates: 42.103233 by -91.296066
This monument is in a striking location at the entrance to Riverside Cemetery. There is a polished red granite base. The total height is 16 feet. Artist Grant Wood is buried here. It is on the SW side of town. Take Elm Street off Main Street to the cemetery. Photos taken 3/26/08 and 10/28/20.
Monticello - Civil War Soldier GPS Coordinates: 42.232466 by -91.175566
This soldier is in a nice setting in Oakwood Cemetery. It is granite and about 15 feet high. It is dedicated to Company H of the 31st Iowa Infantry Regiment. The 31st participated in the Siege of Vicksburg, battles at Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, and Atlanta and the March to the Sea. Company H was led by Captain Sewall S. Farwell (1834-1909) who is buried near the monument. After the War, he served in the Iowa State Senate and as a US Congressman. His photo is shown below. Thanks to SUVCW member Jim Johnston for information about the 31st and Captain Farwell. The cemetery is SE of town on E Oak Street. The monument is in the center section. There is a white painted "GAR" in an area with CW tombstones. There is a flagpole in two sections - the top piece is laid in front. The Olin Cemetery is south of town on Highway 38. Photo taken 10/28/20.
Scotch Grove - Civil War Soldier GPS Coordinates: 42.165200 by -91.064216
This is a very nice 15 foot soldier monument with a polished red granite section. It is located in the Scotch Grove Cemetery about two miles east of town. This small town has many old buildings and in 2014 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Cemetery is located just north of the historic Scotch Grove Presbyterian Church. Take County Road E17 east of Scotch Grove - then turn south on 95th Avenue to the cemetery. Photos taken 3/7/08 and 10/28/20.
Wyoming - Civil War Soldier GPS Coordinates: 42.062700 by -91.014933
This monument has a 10 foot granite base with a 6 foot soldier of white bronze. The only inscription is the "1861-1865." A plaque showing where a Memorial Tree was planted is near-by. It is in the Wyoming Cemetery NW of town on Highway 136. The monument is at the cemetery entrance. Photos taken 10/28/20. The final photo is from an old undated postcard sent by Danny Krock.
