Historical Marker at Battle of Spanish Fort GPS Coordinates: 30.689167 by -87.912500
On April 8, 1865, the Union captured the Confederate held Spanish Fort. The attack was led by the 8th Iowa Infantry and Sergeant Edgar Bras of the 8th Iowa received the Medal of Honor for capturing the Confederate flag. Federal Forces had established a siege and extensive fortifications were built. Unfortunately, a housing development has been built over these fortifications. Kirk Barrett has done a wonderful job by establishing a number of historical markers to help visitors better understand the siege and battle. The SUVCW, Iowa Department, helped fund this handsome marker which has information about the 8th Iowa and Sgt. Bras. It is 42 inches wide and 37 inches high with narrative on both sides. It is difficult to locate with winding streets in the housing development - It is on General Canby Loop - follow General Canby Drive to the Loop. Photos taken 10/30/17.
