Whitestone Hill Monument

When the Civil War started, regular Army units were sent south leaving the frontier unprotected from Indian raids. The Iowa 6th and 7th Cavalry Regiments were formed and sent north to help remedy this situation. U. S. forces, led by units of the 6th Iowa Cavalry, attacked a large concentration of Indians at Whitestone Hill in the Dakota Territory on September 3, 1863. The Indians were driven away and suffered heavy casualties. This Bugler Monument was erected in 1909 and is surrounded by 22 headstones, one for each of the soldiers killed in the battle. Of these 22, 16 were members of the 6th Iowa Cavalry. The battlefield, now a North Dakota Historic Site, is in SE North Dakota, near the town of Kulm.
