Iowa Civil War Cannons
Napoleon
Courthouse Square - Appanoose County - Centerville - 40.734316 by -92.874416
This cannon is a 12-pounder bronze Napoleon, M1857, cast at Henry N. Hooper and Co. It was delivered in 1915, along with two boxes of cast iron cannon balls from the Rock Island Arsenal. The piece weighed 1,239 pounds and threw a 10-pound shell. It was purchased by the Grand Army of the Republic for $150 and was mounted near the west door of the Courthouse. Since my previous visit in 2014, the cannon has been moved to a concrete slab by the monument and a new carriage was built. This was a major improvement.
Iowa Veterans Home - Marshall County - Marshalltown - 42.054133 by -92.933083
The Soldiers Home (now known as the Iowa Veterans Home) has much of historical interest related to the Civil War. The primary promoter of the Home was the G.A.R. It was founded in 1887 for soldiers of the Civil War. Today the facility serves Iowa veterans and is operated by the State of Iowa. For many years it was run with military discipline. A pass had to be obtained to leave and one had to report at the guard house shown below on return. Reveille and taps were sounded daily. The Guardhouse was built in 1902 and restored in 1987. It is located at the corner of Summit and N 13th. The cannon is a 12-pounder bronze Napoleon, M1857, cast at the Revere Copper Co. in 1862. The carriage and limber are in great condition. It is located at the south entrance of the Malloy Building. It is taken out on occasion for parades and reenactments. There is also a cannon in storage without markings and of unknown origin.
Kingsley Cemetery - Plymouth County - Kingsley - 42.596550 by -95.965316
There is a 12-pounder bronze Napoleon, M1857 in the Kingsley cemetery. The dedication was in 1912. The cannon mount was breaking up and a new carriage of PVC was installed in 2015. The new setting is very attractive. The cemetery location is north of Kingsley on Main Street. Thank you to Roy Linn for the photos of the cannon and inscription. There is also a photo with the old cannon mount taken 4/23/08.

The State Historical Museum has 3 cannons. They may be on display or in storage, depending upon the Museum exhibit. These include a 12-pounder bronze Napoleon, M1857, cast at Revere Copper Co. in 1863 and an 8-inch siege mortar, M1861. The other cannon was used by John Brown to train his supporters in Springdale in Cedar County. This is a possible Ellsworth cannon. The Museum is at 600 East Locust west of the State Capital.
