Glendale Cemetery - Pol County - Des Moines - 41.603816 by -93.686683

There are two Civil War cannons in the Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. The one on the left is an 8-inch siege howitzer, M1861 cast at the Cyrus Alger foundry in 1864. The one on the right is a 3-inch ordnance rifle, M1861 from Phoenix Iron Company in 1863. This is a city operated cemetery located between 48th and 55th on University Avenue. The entrance is located across the street from the Waveland Golf course entrance. The cannons are located in Block 16 of the cemetery in a very nice setting in a section for veterans of the Spanish-American War. Photos taken 6/6/08. Note the article from the Des Moines Register "Des Moines Gets Guns" from June 4, 1911. Thanks to John Woolson and Mike Rowley for this information.

Council Bluffs School District - Pottawattamie County - Council Bluffs

This is a 3-inch ordnance rifle, M1861 cast at the Phoenix Iron Works in 1862. It weighs 813 pounds as noted below on the clear markings on the face of the barrel. It was originally on display at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs. The graduating class of 1910 donated the cannon and carriage to the school as their class gift. Due to deterioration of the carriage and then the cannon mount, in 1997 the school had a member of the SUVCW restore the barrel and build a carriage. In turn he would have it for use in reenactments and other special occasions. While it remains in the excellent care of this person and is not on display at the school, it is clearly understood that the ownership remains with the Council Bluffs School District. The first photo was taken at the Kinsman monument rededication on 5/18/13 in Council Bluffs. The other photos were taken 6/13/09 at Carson, Iowa.

Privately Owned - Scott County - Davenport

This is a 3 inch ordnance rifle, M1861 manufactured at the Phoenix Iron Works in 1862. It has serial number 315 and weighs 816 pounds. The carriage and limber look great - the iron is original. The cannon is privately owned and is often in Civil War re-enactments as part of Scott's Tennessee Battery. The cannon owner is in the photo - taken 7/25/08.

Traer Historical Museum - Tama County - Traer - 42.193490 by -92.467066

This is a 3-inch ordnance rifle, M1861, cast at Phoenix Iron Company in 1864. The cannon and carriage are in wonderful condition. It was formerly in a park and the carriage was falling apart. Richard Fishbaugh of Shenandoah, Iowa rebuilt and restored the cannon and carriage. It has been in the Traer Historical Museum since 1991. The Museum is at 514 2nd Street in the business district. Thank you to Board Member Sharon Stoakes and photographer Mark Watson for the photos taken 6/22/23.
