Ames - Civil War Monument - GPS Coordinates: 42.029450 by -93.605850

This is a 6 foot granite monument in the Ames City cemetery. Shrubs were planted behind the monument, making it next to impossible to see the inscription on the back – or for anyone to know it exists. This hidden inscription is the photo on the right. The monument was sponsored by the WRC and DUV in 1930. Thanks to Danny Krock for furnishing the wonderful old postcard with the old soldiers - probably at the dedication of the monument in 1930. The cemetery is in the NE part of the city – take the entrance at Maxwell and East 9th and the monument is visible on the right. Photos taken 11/15/07.

Collins - Civil War Memorial - GPS Coordinates: 41.898016 by -93.291500

This monument is in the Collins Cemetery SE of town. Take S. Main Street out of town - which changes to 315th Street - to the cemetery. There is also a plaque to "All Fallen Comrades who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America." Thank you to SUVCW member Danny Krock for the photo and notification of this monument. It is located on the west side of the cemetery next to an American Legion Monument. The first photo was taken 8/27/10 - the plaque photo was taken 7/12/17.

Maxwell - Civil War Monument - GPS Coordinates: 41.896283 by -93.400450

This Marble monument is about 5 feet on top of a limestone base. The cemetery is on the north side of town – take Main Street north to the cemetery. The inscription is difficult to read but says, “To Unknown dead 1861-1865. From J.H. Ewing Post G. A. R. 305”. Photo taken 7/12/17.

Maxwell - Asa Turner Tombstone - GPS Coordinates: 41.896350 by -93.399650

Asa Turner enlisted in the 8th Iowa Infantry at age 18 on September 28, 1861. He was discharged as a Sgt. on April 27, 1864 and promoted to an officer in the 52nd U. S. Colored Troops. This has been included due to the inscription of a Civil War soldier on the tombstone which is very unusual. Thanks to SUVCW member Danny Krock for his photo and passing on this interesting memorial. It is located in the Maxwell Cemetery on the north side of town - take Main Street north to the cemetery. The tombstone is east of the CW monument and close to the road. Photo taken 8/26/10.

Nevada - Confederate Cannon, Monument and Gettysburg Address - GPS Coordinates: 42.020483 by -93.453166

This 3 inch Confederate bronze rifled cannon was cast at the A. B. Reading and Brother foundry in Vicksburg in 1861. It is the “No 1” of this design manufactured there. The cannon and carriage are in excellent condition. The final Yankee victim occurred in 1918 celebrating Armistice Day – one of the celebrators was accidentally killed when the cannon was fired. The Gettysburg Address plaque was dedicated by the WRC in 1930. Originally the cannon and plaque were together but were separated when the old courthouse was replaced about 25 years ago.

On Flag Day, 2013, an impressive ceremony was held to dedicate the new monument and re-dedicate the canon and Gettysburg Address plaque. The monument is dedicated to Lt. Jason Ferguson of Company D, 12th Iowa Infantry. He was from Nevada and died of wounds at the Battle of Shiloh. He was the first fatality from Story County. The administrative building is located just south of the business district. Photos taken 11/15/07, 8/28/08 and 6/14/13.
