United States Guns

Monumental Square - Sac County - Sac City - 42.421750 by -94.988166

There are four 105mm Howitzers M3A around the monument - these are WWII cannons. Originally there were CW cannons - see the old postcard. They no doubt were scrapped during WWII and later replaced with the WWII howitzers. It is located just east of the business district on Highway 20. Also see the separate listing for the GAR Hall just west of the monument. Photos of the monument were taken 9/22/21 - photos of the howitzers were taken 2/24/09. Thank you to Danny Krock and David Shedlock for providing copies of the old undated postcards.

City Park - Buchanan County - Lamont - 42.600533 by -91.642300

Close to the monument is a very well maintained 105mm Howitzer, M101, a WWII era cannon. The park is in the center of town - the monument and cannon are near Bush and Pine Steets. Photos were taken 7/11/09.

Veterans Memorial - Pottawattamie County - Avoca - 41.477766 by -95.339183

This is a US 37mm M3 - a WWII anti-tank gun used in the early part of the war - 20,000 were made from 1939-1943.

Arlington Cemetery - Woodbury County - Moville - 42.496433 by -96.056483

The cannon is a 3-inch tank gun, M5. There originally was another cannon located here but it would have been scrapped for use during World War II. This likely is a "replacement cannon" provided sometime afterwards. The US ordnance took a 3" anti-aircraft tube and mated it to an M2 105mm howitzer breech and carriage to develop this anti-tank gun. It was used in 1943 and 1944 but more effective weapons were developed for use later in the War. Thanks to Tom Batha for identification and information about this cannon. Photos taken 9/26/21.
