Brighton - Civil War Soldier - GPS Coordinates: 41.179716 by -91.817816

This soldier is in Hillcrest Cemetery. The monument is about 18 feet tall. The uniform is very unusual. The inscription says ”In Memory of the Heroes who fell in the defense of the Union from 1861 to 1865.” The cemetery is on the NE side of town – off to the west of Highway 1. Photos taken 7/8/20.

This uniform has always been a puzzle but information was received in December, 2021 from Mike Huston that helps explain it. A number of soldiers from Brighton were in Company H, 7th Iowa Infantry Regiment. One of these, George Logan, age 20, was killed at the Battle of Belmont in Kentucky. This was on November 7, 1861, very early in the Civil War. He was the first soldier from this area killed in battle and later was honored when the Brighton GAR Post No. 363 was named for him. From the 7th Iowa Regimental History written by Henry I. Smith, "While at Birds Point the regiment was uniformed for the first time. For some reason which I never understood our regiments first uniform was different from any other, and was not a regulation suit, it consisted of a dark blue jacket with light blue trimmings, light blue pants and fatigue cap, a sort of a zouave outfit." It seems a strong possibility that the uniform for the monument was meant to replicate the uniform the regiment wore and to honor George Logan. The headgear probably is the standard forage cap with the bill broken off. Thanks very much to Mike Huston, who lives in the region, for helping us understand this unusual monument.

Crawfordsville - Marble Obelisk - GPS Coordinates: 41.214450 by -91.547233

This attractive Civil War monument has about 160 veterans inscribed on 4 sides. It is made of marble and stands about 15 feet high. It is west of town on Road G6W – note that there are two cemeteries and this is the furthest west. Photos taken 7/8/20.

Kalona - Civil War Monument - GPS Coordinates: 41.492533 by -91.708216

This is a nice 10 foot granite obelisk in Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona. The inscription says, “In memory of the unknown dead 1861 - 1865.” It is on the north side of town – take 3rd Street north to J Avenue and the monument is visible from the street. Photos taken 7/8/20.

Richmond - Civil War Plaque - GPS Coordinates: 41.449300 by -91.693600

This plaque is on the back side of the sign for the Richmond Public Cemetery. There are 20 CW soldiers listed on the plaque. The cemetery is located east of town off Howard Street/140th Street. Thank you to Steve Hanken for notifying me of this memorial. Photo taken 7/8/20.
